Manufacturing Engineer

Manufacturing Engineer
Poole
£47,250 – £55,300

If you’re a Manufacturing Engineer who enjoys building robust processes, improving performance on the shop floor, and owning the full manufacturing system around a part (routing, tooling, gauges, inspection plans and documentation), this Manufacturing Engineer role has a strong Manufacturing Engineering bias with CNC programming as part of the toolkit, not the whole job.

This Manufacturing Engineer position reports into the Engineering Manager and exists to support new business introduction and continuous improvement across existing products and processes in a precision engineering environment. You’ll develop and optimise manufacturing processes using data, drive improvements in quality/cost/delivery KPIs, and ensure machine shop practices and processes are implemented and controlled through the quality management system.

The Manufacturing Engineer role

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you’ll develop planned manufacturing processes for new products, define process controls (tooling, inspection plans, key characteristics), and ensure production is set up to deliver at the lowest cost and highest quality. You’ll also generate CNC part programmes for 3, 4 and 5-axis machine tools, including tooling plans, setup sheets, and proving programmes into production.

This Manufacturing Engineer role suits a self-motivated engineer with precision manufacturing experience and strong knowledge of aerospace/defence practices, lean improvement, and AS9100-controlled environments.

Day-to-day responsibilities of a Manufacturing Engineer

  • Develop and optimise manufacturing processes using data and lean principles
  • Support NPI planning, including process controls, tooling, inspection plans and key characteristics
  • Generate CNC part programmes for 3, 4 and 5-axis machines, including tool definitions, setup sheets, tooling plans and proving into production
  • Own supporting process elements: routings, tooling, gauges, workholding, test equipment and CNC programmes
  • Ensure inspection requirements are planned and achieved, working closely with QA
  • Drive supplier/shop-floor problem solving: containment, root cause and corrective actions
  • Develop process control documentation and support project delivery to cost and timescale
  • Identify cost structures and reduction opportunities, including capital improvement cases where needed
  • Research and introduce emerging manufacturing technologies where beneficial

What they’re looking for – Manufacturing Engineer

  • Precision engineering background (milling/turning) with strong cutting tool and machine tool understanding
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings/specifications
  • Aerospace/defence exposure, ideally operating to AS9100
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • CAD/CAM capability to generate 3D models and produce CNC programmes (Fusion 360 or similar beneficial)
  • Engineering qualification to degree / HNC / HND level (or equivalent)
  • Proven ability to plan workload and work to schedules
  • Lean improvement track record (Green Belt advantageous)

Other points – Manufacturing Engineer

  • Previous use of Fusion 360/Hypermill/Mastercam or similar CAM system
  • Ability to measure, analyse and present capital opportunities for breakthrough manufacturing techniques
  • Green Belt accredited (advantage)
  • Project management skills (advantage)

Personal characteristics – Manufacturing Engineer

  • Strong stakeholder awareness and engagement
  • Change agent mindset with strong communication at all levels
  • Able to prioritise, simplify and drive actions to completion
  • Strong problem solving skills with fast containment and root cause capability
  • Analytical, consistent, and customer focused
  • High integrity, accountability and ownership
  • Self-motivated and self-managing, results oriented
